Blackhawks update: Patrick Kane back on the ice; timetable unchanged

Joel Quenneville didn’t hide his enthusiasm about Patrick Kane’s latest step towards his return from a broken clavicle. Asked about Kane watching practice Friday at Johnny’s Ice House, Quenneville volunteered that Kane not only watched practice, but skated before practice and looked good.

“He was actually flying out there,” Quenneville said. “He’s progressing real well. Now he’s going to have a tough stretch of trying to keep him away from trying to play a game right now.”

Quenneville said that despite that rosy review, the timetable for Kane’s return remains the same — mid- to late-May. But it will be interesting to see if the Hawks can resist the temptation to accelerate the timetable if Kane continues to progress quickly.

“We’ll see how that plays out,” Quenneville said. “We’ll do what’s best for him. There will definitely be hurdles that have to be passed — the medical clearance first and then you go from there.”

For now, though, Kane’s return is not an urgent issue. The Hawks are 8-1-1 since he was injured against the Florida Panthers on Feb. 24. Here’s a capsule look at where they stand heading into Saturday night’s game against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center:
